How to Find Your Nakshatra (Birth Star) and Pada: Vedic Astronomy Explained

While Western astrology places primary emphasis on the Sun sign, Vedic astrology prioritizes the Janma Nakshatra (birth star)—the specific lunar mansion occupied by the Moon at the time of birth. The Moon represents the subconscious mind, emotional instincts, perception, and memory.

The Mathematics of the 27 Nakshatras #

The 360-degree celestial ecliptic is partitioned into 27 equal segments:

Arc of one Nakshatra=36027=1320=800 of arc\text{Arc of one Nakshatra} = \frac{360^\circ}{27} = 13^\circ 20' = 800' \text{ of arc}

Each Nakshatra is further subdivided into 4 quarters, known as Padas:

Arc of one Pada=13204=320=200 of arc\text{Arc of one Pada} = \frac{13^\circ 20'}{4} = 3^\circ 20' = 200' \text{ of arc}

Across the entire zodiac, there are 27×4=10827 \times 4 = 108 Padas, aligning with the sacred number 108 celebrated across ancient Indian sciences, yoga, and meditation mantras.
